Update #3: PR.13.04.00 was installed went live at the following times for the operational GOES-R satellites:

Update #2: The implementation of the PR.13.04.00 software build has been moved to tomorrow, Wednesday April 17, 2024. Update is likely to be completed by 1600 UTC.

Update #1:  The implementation of the PR.13.04.00 software build has been delayed to April 16, 2024.

Topic:  Install of PR.13.04.00 software build for GOES-16 and GOES-18

Date/Time Issued: April 17, 2024  1810 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES-16 and GOES-18 Aerosol Detection Product and Shortwave Radiation products

Date/Time of Initial Impact: April 9, 2024

Date/Time of Expected End: N/A

Length of Outage: N/A

Details/Specifics of Change: On April 9, 2024, the PR.13.04.00 software release will be put into operations on the GOES-R Ground System. This update will initiate the distribution of the Enterprise Aerosol Detection Product (ADP) and Enterprise Shortwave Radiation (SWR) algorithms and remove the current Baseline versions of those two algorithms. The details of the changes coming with the Enterprise algorithms are provided below.

Aerosol Detection Product

The outgoing Baseline ADP provided binary masks for aerosols, dust, and smoke, along with associated DQF information (e.g. low, medium, high confidence). The Enterprise ADP no longer provides a generic aerosol mask, but now includes a cloud mask and snow/ice mask, in addition to the smoke and dust masks. DQFs are provided, as well as two new Product Quality Information (PQI) variables that contain quality information on geolocation and input data sources. The table below summarizes the changes between the contents of the Baseline ADP algorithm and the Enterprise version.

In addition, there are also changes to the definitions contained within the DQF variable, which are provided in the table below. Please note that the QC_ASH flag will always have a value of “11”, or “Bad/Missing”. This is due to the fact that Ash is not retrieved by the ADP algorithm for ABI, but is there to support the VIIRS ADP product.

Shortwave Radiation

The Shortwave Radiation algorithm, which includes both the Downward Shortwave Radiation (DSR) and Reflected Shortwave Radiation (RSR) products, is being significantly upgraded.  The Enterprise algorithm will now produce the Full Disk DSR and RSR products at a resolution of 2 km instead of the 50 km and 25 km products (respectively) of the Baseline algorithm. The cadence of the SWR products will also be moving from hourly to every 10 minutes. Along with changes to product spatial and temporal resolution, there is a new Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) end product that will be part of the algorithm output.

In addition to the improvements for the Full Disk Shortwave Radiation products, NESDIS has approved the removal of the CONUS and Mesoscale scenes of the GOES-East and GOES-West Shortwave Radiation Products. There are no known users for the CONUS scenes of DSR and RSR or the Mesoscale scene of DSR which all have coarser resolution than 2 km and are hourly products. Previous notice was given on this decommissioning effort and a public notice posted on March 5, 2024 can be found at the link provided in the Web Site section below.
