REPORT DATE: 09-07-2018 REPORT TIME: 1031 UTC REGION: ATLANTIC SUB REGION: MID ATLANTIC U.S. AREA/BLOCK: North Atlantic 7004 IMAGE DATE: 09-06-2018 IMAGE TIME: 2234 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL1A MODE: Interferometric Wide (IW) VV RESOLUTION: 5x20 meter LOCATION: 40°06'02" N/69°55'03" W AREA: 1.23 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The narrow anomaly was believed to be an oil slick that emanated from the site of the wreck known as Wreck 1487. The oil slick extended approximately 5.8 nm NNW from the wreck site and had a moderate to diffuse contrast to the surroundings. The slick's geographic orientation was possibly due to the vector sum of westerly winds and clockwise model ocean currents in the vicinity. UNCERTAINTIES: Even though the slick only had a moderate-to-diffuse contrast to its surroundings, we are certain that the anomaly was made of oil that escaped Wreck 1487, as it was directly connected to that site.
