REPORT DATE: 09-21-2019 REPORT TIME: 0900 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: MISSISSIPPI CANYON 20 IMAGE DATE: 09-21-2019 IMAGE TIME: 0002 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL1A MODE: Interferometric Wide (IW) VV RESOLUTION: 20 meter LOCATION: 28°56'16" N/88°58'14" W AREA: 0.45 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: Medium-High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. A largely shapeless oil slick measuring roughly 0.5 nmi by 0.5 nmi was seen emanating from the Destroyed Taylor Platform. The slick was located mainly to the west of the point source, which was consistent with surface winds from the east at 20-25 knots. UNCERTAINTIES: Winds in excess of 20 knots are not ideal for detecting oil, which may account for the shape of the oil slick and its relatively diffuse edges. For this reason confidence was assessed as medium-high.
