All NOAA POES, All Instruments, Leap Second and End of Year Activities, 31 December 2005 - Issued: 29 December 2005; 1345 UTC

Topic:
End of year activities to support NOAA polar satellite operations

Date/Time(UTC) Message Issued:
29 December 2005, 1345 UTC

Satellite(s) Involved:
All NOAA POES

Instrument(s) Involved:
All instruments

Product(s) Involved/Affected:
All Products/loss of data

Date/Time(UTC) of Initial Implementation:
31 December 2005, Time 2359 UTC

Details/Specifics of Change:
Two events will occur at the end of this year:
Leap second - The onboard clocks for all NOAA satellites will be adjusted (where necessary) to account for the addition of a leap second at the end of the year. The adjustments will be made in a way that accounts for the drift error and drift rate for each satellite clock. Please see the attached section of SOCC notice for details (Leap_second_2005). Navigation and Level 1b data will reflect the leap second change. This is considered a no impact change to the user community. Look for updated clock drift files on the internet at the PPP site given below. Please report problems to Emily Harrod.

Record stop to separate 2005 and 2006 data - Spacecraft recorders will be set to capture the last data from 2005 separate from the 2006 data. These data will be played back for processing separately to avoid possible problems with ground processing. At a minimum, a 40 second data gap will be created. Please see the attach subset of SOCC notice for details (Year_crossover_0506).
