Topic:
HIRS Filter Wheel Motor Current Increase

Date/Time(UTC) Message Issued:
6 February 2003; 1830 UTC

Satellite(s) Involved:
NOAA-15

Instrument(s) Involved:
HIRS

Product(s) Involved/Affected:
All

Date/Time(UTC) of Initial Implementation:
1 February 2003/1800 UTC

Details/Specifics of Change:

On February 1, the NOAA 15 HIRS experienced increased filter wheel motor
current, saturating channel 7 making it unusable. The Satellite Operations
Control Center turned on the filter wheel housing heater for 24 hours to
correct the anomaly and return channel 7 to normal. On February 3, the
Quality Control and Trending system was used to monitor the anomaly. It
revealed that when the heater was turned off, the channel 19 lunar intrusion
detection logic was triggered for all scan lines. On February 4, lunar
intrusion was switched off for 24 hours to allow the system to reset itself.
We expect the calibration problem to be corrected and Lunar Intrusion
corrections switched back on as of the following orbits:
