*Topic*:
Visible Calibration Coefficients for February 2006 ; AVHRR Instrument

*Date/Time(UTC) Message Issued:*
27 January 2006 1400 UTC

*Satellite(s) Involved:*
NOAA-16,17 and 18

*Instrument(s) Involved:*
AVHRR

*Product(s) Involved/Affected:*
No products affected at this time. This is a notification message

*Date/Time(UTC) of Initial Implementation:*
TBA

*Details/Specifics of Change:*
The following update of the calibration coefficients are recommended for:

*NOAA-16 AVHRR

Ch_1_lo = 0.05430*count - 2.094, count<498.96
Ch_1_hi = 0.1585*count - 53.87, count>498.96

Ch_2_lo = 0.05871*count - 2.218, count<500.16
Ch_2_hi = 0.1730*count - 59.37, count>500.16

NOAA-17 AVHRR

Ch_1_lo = 0.05507*count - 2.204, count<501.12
Ch_1_hi = 0.1617*count - 55.62, count>501.12

Ch_2_lo = 0.06667*count - 2.618, count<500.73
Ch_2_hi = 0.1985*count - 68.72, count>500.73

Ch_3_lo = 0.03192*count - 1.345, count<501.37
Ch_3_hi = 0.2237*count - 97.68, count>501.37

NOAA-18 AVHRR

Ch_1_lo = 0.05341*count - 2.106, count<500.54
Ch_1_hi = 0.1592*count - 54.76, count>500.54

Ch_2_lo = 0.06202*count - 2.444, count<500.40
Ch_2_hi = 0.1861*count - 64.84, count>500.40

on February 14. These coefficients are intended to be optimal on
February 28, in the middle of the two scheduled updates.

Please note that the following changes will also be implemented along with the viscal implementation ( expected to occur on 14 February 2006)

As part of the Viscal update for the month of February, NOAA will implement the instrument scientist's recommendations to correct NOAA-N/18 and L/16 analog telemetry coefficients as indicated below. The user community will be provided test 1b data beginning on Wednesday, February 1 (look for second notice). Please review the changes and provide your concerns or requests no later than February 10.
*NOAA-N/18 analog telemetry coefficients changes:*
The following temperatures are now reported in Kelvin rather than Celsius:
Radiation Temperature
Baseplate Temperature
Electronics Temperature
Patch Temperature
Scan Motor Temperature
Filter Wheel Motor Temperature

They were corrected by converting the following 1B file Parameters from Celsius to Kelvin:
Radiator Temperature Coefficient 1
Baseplate Temperature Coefficient 1
Electronics Temperature Coefficient 1
Patch Temperature Coefficient 1
Scan Motor Temperature Coefficient 1
Filter Wheel Motor Temperature Coefficient 1
*
NOAA-L/16 1B changes were as follows: *
Scan Motor Current Coefficient 2 was changed from .4000000E+01 to .4000000E+00.
Patch Controller Power Coefficient 2 (linear) value .3232320E-02 which was reported as 0 was moved to the Patch Controller Power Coefficient 3 (quadratic) value.

The same changes apply to the NOAA-L/16 and NOAA-N/18 1B*s.

PLEASE EXCUSE THE REDUNDANCY OF THE MESSAGES TODAY. BUT IS IMPORTANT THAT THIS INORMATION IS PROVIDED TO YOU.
