Topic:
Local Oscillator Problem Resolution Failed - Switched Back to Primary

Date/Time(UTC) Message Issued:
27 November 2002; 1815 UTC

Satellite(s) Involved:
NOAA-16

Instrument(s) Involved:
AMSU-A1

Product(s) Involved/Affected:
All data users

Date/Time(UTC) of Initial Implementation:
26 November 2002 2137 UTC

Details/Specifics of Change:
On November 26, four attempts were made to get the NOAA-16 AMSU-A1 to lock
up on the redundant oscillator. Each attempt failed. On orbit number 11235
at 2137Z, operations were switched back to the primary oscillator. This
change began with the following pass:
NSS.AMAX.NL.D02330.S2123.E2310.B1123536.GC

No further attempts will be made this week. The team investigating this
problem will meet again next week to review alternatives. Please note that
in light of the problems encountered with the initial switch to the
redundant oscillator, we will not treat future attempts at correcting this
problem as a "no impact" activity for the user community. Advanced
notification of any actions to be taken will be given in accordance with our
notification policy. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
