Satellite Outage/Anomaly: MetOp-A AVHRR, HIRS, AMSU-A and MHS Data, Issued: October 25, 2011, 2100 UTC

Date/Time Issued:
October 25, 2011 @ 2100 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted:
Metop-A AVHRR, HIRS, AMSU-A and MHS Data

Date/Time of Initial Impact:
October 22, 2011 @ 2153 UTC

Date/Time of Expected End:
October 23 2011 @ 2045 UTC

Length of Outage:
Approx. 23 Hours

Details/Specifics of Change:
There was an anomaly with MetOp-A Satellite. As a result MetOp-A experienced a Payload Switch Off (PLSOL) event on 22 October 2011 (DOY 295) at 22:38 UTC. All science data from the NOAA instruments halted and were unavailable from sensing time 21:53 on DOY 295. The instruments were recovered to operational/science-producing states on 23 Oct 2011 (DOY 296) at the following times:

15:55:52 UTC – HIRS

15:59:20 UTC – AVHRR

17:24:02 UTC – MHS

19:12:32 UTC – AMSU-A2

20:45:00 UTC – AMSU-A1

There were noticeable noise (NEΔT) increases for the first 12 hours or so immediately after turning on the instruments. Some of the AMSU-A channels had NEΔT out of SPEC. However, all the NOAA instruments later resumed their performance patterns observed before the anomaly.
