*Topic*:
AVHRR Increased Noise

*Date/Time(UTC) Message Issued:*
27 September 2005, 2030 UTC

*Satellite(s) Involved:*
NOAA-14 and 16

*Instrument(s) Involved:*
AVHRR

*Product(s) Involved/Affected:*
All products/Bar coding

*Date/Time(UTC) of Initial Implementation:*
24 September 2005, Time 1830 UTC

*Details/Specifics of Change:*
On September 24, the NOAA-16 AVHRR began showing increased noise in all
channels. SOCC attempted correct the problem by performing manual
rephases in addition to the scheduled South pole rephase, but this only
cleared the data for a few minutes. The problem is under investigation.
We will continue to monitor the instrument and take corrective action if
possible.

Over the previous week, NOAA-14 AVHRR also began experiencing increased
noise problems. SOCC plans to institute scheduled rephasing once per
orbit at the South pole. This action improved the NOAA-16 data until
recently. This will be added to the normal schedule sometime around
October 11. We will continue to monitor the instrument and take
corrective action if possible.
