SST -- NOTES: November 3, 1997 SST anomalies continue as large as ever throughout all of the tropical eastern Pacific as El Nino - 97 shows no signs of easing its grip. Cooler waters, with the approaching winter season in the Northern Hemisphere, have cooled even more than usual off the Canadian Pacific coast -- SST anomalies there have gone from much above normal to slightly below normal in the past couple months. Off the eastern seaboard of the US a large pool of below normal temperatures appears to be developing over a significant portion of the western North Atlantic on either side of the Gulf Stream. To the north and east, toward Iceland and UK, a large region of positive anomalies has taken up residence. The smoke/dust over Indonesia is believed mostly responsible for the largely erroneous below normal anomaly that trails westward into the Indian Ocean along the equator as the satellite is not making accurate surface observations of ocean temperatures due to these aerosols.
