NOTES: 16 Sep 97 -- SST Anomalies El Nino is still the main event! Upwelled wakes from Hurricanes Erika [north of Puerto Rico] and Linda [off Baja California] reveal marked differences from earlier anomaly charts. Both "Linda", and more recently "Nora" derived much of their energy over some of the most robust positive SST anomalies ever seen off Mexico's Pacific coast. During the 82/83 El Nino, hurricanes prevailed throughout the fall and winter months from Hawaii [Iwa-Nov82] to Tahiti [in the SE Tropical Pacific these events established a new modern day record]; all this from an anomalous heat supply and a conducive atmosphere. Cooler than normal waters continue around Indonesia and the Phillippines where drought conditions prevail due to El Nino. Warmer than normal conditions in the northern Indian Ocean-Arabian Sea off Africa indicate the northward flowing Somali Current is extremely weak this year as upwelling [typical for August into October] is not in evidence.
