Topic: Transition of DCS Services from GOES-15 to GOES-17

Date/Time Issued: October 31, 2018 M-B2110 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted: All GOES-15 LRIT and DCS products

Date/Time of Initial Impact: October 29, 2018 2015 UTC

Date/Time of Expected End: December 10, 2018 tentatively at 1600 UTC

Length of Event/Outage: See details below.

Details/Specifics of Change: NOAA will transition the DCS services from GOES-15 to GOES-17 on November 15, 2018. GOES DCS Direct Readout Ground System (DRGS) customers will lose the GOES-15 DCS downlink as the satellite moves to 128 degrees west. The GOES-17 transponders services will be made available on November 15, 2018 at 1500 UTC.

The transition timeline is as follows:

M-B

1500 UTC: DCS and HRIT/EMWIN transponders on GOES-17 will be activated

1600 UTC: Handover DCS operations from GOES-15 to GOES-17. Wallops CDAS will transfer uplink pilot to GOES-17 and will reconfigure Wallops and NSOF DCS demodulators to ingest GOES-17 downlink data. Transition should be completed in under 5 minutes.

1615 UTC: Disable GOES-15 DCPR transponder

1620 UTC: Enable GOES-17 modulation of HRIT/EMWIN broadcast

The GOES-15 LRIT broadcast will be the operational GOES West broadcast until GOES-17 is officially declared the GOES West satellite on December 10, 2018.M-B After the transition, the GOES-15 LRIT broadcast will be disabled, tentatively at 1600 UTC.
