Topic: GOES-16 and GOES-17 ABI Band 2 radiance correction

Date/Time Issued: April 16, 2019 1605 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES-16 and GOES-17 ABI product change

Date/Time of Initial Impact: April 23, 2019 1110 UTC

Date/Time of Expected End: April 23, 2019 1515 UTC

Length of Outage: None

Details/Specifics of Change:

A correction to the ABI Band 2 (0.64 micron) L1b radiance for both GOES-East (GOES-16) and GOES-West (GOES-17) will be applied on April 23, 2019 via their respective solar calibration activities. The correction will reduce the GOES-West Band 2 L1b radiance values by 6.20% and reduce the GOES-East Band 2 L1b radiance values by 6.92%. There will be no impact to data distribution. Users can expect to see Band 2 imagery appear slightly darker once the correction is applied.

The radiometric bias correction was derived through comparison of the ABI L1b data to other satellite data, ground target observations, and (for GOES-16 only) airborne field campaign data.

This change will be implemented regardless of CWD.

Details on the measurement of the radiometric bias are given in the GOES-16 ABI L1b/CMI Product Performance Guide and the GOES-17 ABI L1b/CMI Provisional Validation PS-PVR documents. These documents can be found at: https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/data-access/satellite-data/goes-r-series-satellites
