Update #1: This is a clarification to the original notification. The AWIPS distribution will include not only 30 minute SCMI (Sectorized Cloud and Moisture Imagery) for Full Disk and CONUS sectors, but also 30 minute SCMI for Alaska (AK) and Hawaii (HI) sectors. During Mode 4, the CONUS, AK, and HI sectors are all subsets from the Full Disk.^M

Details/Specifics of Change:

^M

A two-phase test is planned to investigate whether modifying the GOES-17 (GOES-West) ABI scan pattern during periods of high thermal loading would decrease the number of saturated images currently resulting due to the loop heat pipe anomaly. For phase one, GOES-17 ABI will execute one hour of Cooling Timeline Test activities.M-B The test will be a variation of Mode 4 (continuous full disk without CONUS or mesoscale domain sectors) operations with a 5 minute full disk scan (formatted and populated as nominal Mode 4 output) followed by 25 minutes of star looks and IR calibrations. This 30 minute pattern will then be repeated one more time for a total of a 60 minute test.M-B Upon conclusion of the one hour test, GOES-17 ABI will return to nominal Mode 6 operations including the ability to make mesoscale domain sector requests. INR and radiometric calibration will be maintained throughout the data outage.M-BM-B

^M

A follow-on, phase two, 6-hour test is tentatively planned for four consecutive days (October 18-21, 2019) from 06:00-12:00 UTC on each of the four days.M-B During the 6-hour test periods, this same cycle of a 5 minute full disk scan followed by 25 minutes of star looks and IR calibrations will be repeated continuously.M-B

For both phases of the test, product availability will occur every 30 minutes with timestamps of HH:05 (representing data collected from HH:00 through HH:05) and HH:35 (representing data collected from HH:30 through HH:35).M-B The specific product time stamps for October 15, 2019 will be 11:05, 11:35 UTC with Mode 6 resuming at 12:00 UTC. The specific time stamps for October 18, 2019 through October 21, 2019 will be at 06:05, 06:35, 07:05, 07:35, 08:05, 08:35, 09:05, 09:35, 10:05, 10:35, 11:05, 11:35 UTC with Mode 6 resuming at 12:00 UTC.
