Update #3: After the NDE 2.0.24 installation on August 6, 2020, some failures of GOES 17 ASR/CSR BUFR were identified.  Additionally, VIIRS Active Fire is currently missing the day-crossing granule. The NDE team is working to resolve these issues.

Update #2: The NDE System Upgrade (release 2.0.24) originally scheduled for August 5, 2020 has been rescheduled to occur on August 6, 2020 due to CWD.

Update #1: This is a 2 week reminder for the NDE System Upgrade on August 5th. Please note changes in red text below. GOES-17 ASOS SCP will be excluded in this upgrade, instead GOES-17 CSR/ASR will be included. GOES-16 FLS and Enterprise Cloud, Aerosol, Cryosphere and land products are undergoing further verification.  A future notification will be sent If there are any schedule changes.

Topic: NDE System Upgrade

Date/Time Issued: August 7, 2020 1515 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted:  All NDE products

Date/Time of Initial Impact:  August 6, 2020 1530 UTC

Date/Time of Expected End: August 6, 2020 1800 UTC

Length of Outage: 2.5 hours

Details/Specifics of Change:

This installation of NDE release 2.0.24 is planned to occur during back orbits. NDE will not be ingesting, processing or distributing data during installation. No data loss is expected, but there will be a possible backlog of processing when installation is complete.

Algorithm changes include:

Enterprise Cloud, Aerosol, and cryosphere products upgrade from v2.1 to v2.3, land products from v1.2 to v1.4:

The jump in the revision number is due to combined changes of v2.2 and v2.3. The main change is the updated cloud mask look up table, which fixed the issue of overestimated clouds over snow covered land surfaces. IMS/SSMI ancillary data is now used for snow mask. The previously used GFS snow mask is used as a fallback if IMS/SSMI is not available. OISST ancillary data is now optional for processing units that use it. When OISST is not present, GFS data is used as a fallback.

After the upgrade, the product shortname in PDA stays the same, but the version number in the filename will change from v2r1 to v2r3 and land products from v1r2 to v1r4.

New products included in this release are:

GOES-16 Fog/Low Stratus (FLS):

The GOES-16 FLS products include the Fog Depth, Marginal Visual Flight Rule Probability (MVFR), Instrument Flight Rule Probability (IFR), and Low Instrument Flight Rule Probability (LIFR).  The products are in NetCDF4 format and are available in both CONUS and Full Disk coverage.

GOES-17 ASR/CSR:

GOES-17 All Sky Radiances and Clear Sky Radiances derived from GOES-17 using Channels 7 - 16

GOES-17 ASOS SCP:

GOES-17 Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) Satellite Cloud Product (SCP) will be generated hourly using the GOES-17 pixel level cloud products derived from the GOES-R cloud algorithms (Optimal Estimation) ABI data. The SCP product includes Cloud Cover, Cloud Top Height, and Effective Cloud Amount at middle (631-400mb) and high (above 400mb) layers of the atmosphere.  The product files are listed below in the table:
