Topic: GOES-16/17 GLM, MAG, SEISS product outages and software patch updates scheduled for October 27, 2020

Date/Time Issued: October 23, 2020 2045 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted: GLM, MAG, SEISS products

Date/Time of Initial Impact: October 27, 2020 1600 UTC

Date/Time of Expected End: N/A

Length of Outage: A single 10 minute outage per affected product

Details/Specifics of Change:

Two GOES-16/17 GLM, MAG, and SEISS software patches (DO.09.02.00 and DO 09.03.00) are planned for October 27, 2020. Brief data outages of up to 10 minutes may occur per product between 1600 UTC and 2100 UTC for the following products:

The updates will result in changes to GLM, SEISS, and MAG products. GOES Rebroadcast (GRB) and GOES-R Product Definition and Users’ Guide (PUG) impacts and updates are noted below:

GLM

GLM Lightning L2 Radiation filter threshold

The filter that removes radiation dots will now first check that the number of Groups in a Flash are less than a threshold amount and that the total constituent Events in the Flash are less than a threshold amount. The Flash will be removed from the product only if both conditions are true. Previous behavior would eliminate the Flash independent of the number of constituent Events..

GLM

Incorrect GOES-17 GLM L2+ Event Longitude Values

Resolves issue of incorrect Event longitudes west of 180W. Added logic to check if the longitude value is greater than zero and if so, subtract 360 before performing the conversion from floating point to unsigned short.  Produces event_lon values consistent with the associated Group and Flash longitudes.

GLM

GLM Geolocate does not handle empty EFRC output correctly

Improvement to anomalous data handling that resolves false latency violation reports. Affects operations only - no change in output product.

GLM

Time Error in GLM Metadata

Resolves an issue where incorrect times were sometimes output for the following fields: flash_time_offset_of_first_event, flash_time_offset_of_last_event, flash_frame_time_offset_of_first_event, flash_frame_time_offset_of_last_event, group_time_offset, group_frame_time_offset, event_time_offset.

SEISS MPS-Hi, SEISS SGPS

G16&G17 MPS-HI and SGPS L1b data gaps near IFCs

Resolves issue of 5-minute data gaps that occurred in MPS-HI and SGPS L1b products during IFCs. Now produces fill or partial products where possible.

SEISS MPS-Hi

MPS-HI (all units): Change dosimeter units

Updates the units for the variables derived from the MPS-HI dosimeter to cGy/s (centiGrays per second) from cGy.   The affected variables are:  Dos1_HiLetDose, Dos2_HiLetDose, Dos1_LoLetDose, Dos2_LoLetDose. No change in values (1-second product).

MAG, SEISS,EXIS,SUVI

Reduce cadence of APID 255 to space weather L0 storage

Reduces volume of space weather L0 repositories by subsetting  20 Hz spacecraft APID 255 data down to 1.25 Hz (16:1 reduction). The space weather L1b products are also produced using the lower cadence Orbit and Attitude data.

MAG

New method to determine MAG maintenance/off flag

Changes method used to indicate maintenance mode from a sensor axis having zero counts (which can occur nominally) to using telemetry available in APID 200.

MAG

Remove IB shadow flag from good quality flag mask

Removes the "potentially_degraded_due_to_IB_MAG_in_shadow_qf" quality flag from the "good_quality_qf" flag mask for GOES-17.  This flag is only needed for GOES-16, which has a known issue when the Inboard sensor is in shadow.

MAG

Update arcjet correction to use inverse matrices

Resolves a discrepancy between corrected and uncorrected IB and OB frame data when the Arc Jets are not in use.  This update changes the algorithm to use inverse matrices instead of transposed matrices for certain coordinate transformations.
