Topic: SAB and NESDIS Product Outages

Date/Time Issued: August 11, 2021 1614Z

Product(s) or Data Impacted:
SAB Tropical, Volcano, Fire, and Precipitation products

Date/Time of Initial Impact:
August 10, 2021 1800Z

Date/Time of Expected End:
 TBD

Length of Outage:
 TBD

Details/Specifics of Change:
A cut network cable has resulted in a loss of communication between NCEP and SAB. Reportedly, the local power company is onsite and has determined that three power poles need to be replaced before the fiber can be repaired.

The following SAB products are affected:

Tropical - All tropical cyclone position and intensity estimates not making it into OPAH and the ATCF.

Volcano - All Volcanic Ash Advisories and Volcanic Ash Graphics are not making it to the OSPO and SSD web pages at

Washington VAAC Homepage (noaa.gov)

Current Volcanic Ash Advisories - Washington VAAC - Satellite Products and Services Division - Office of Satellite and Product Operations (noaa.gov)

And also through the GP5 Listserve

Fire - Fire and Smoke VGF files not being disseminated to NCEP Centers

Precipitation - All Precipitation text products are not being disseminated to the SPSD Precip Page

In addition – this outage is affecting non-PDA data distribution from NESDIS to multiple NOAA and DoD sites. NCEP access to NESDIS McIDAS servers is down, resulting in a data loss to N-AWIPS, CPC, NHC, and AWC (and possibly others; primarily Himawari and Metosat data). We are experiencing connection failures with DoD sites AFWA, NAVO and FNMOC.
