Topic: GOES-18 ABI Band 7 “Barcode Artifact”

Date/Time Issued: July 28, 2022 1633 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES-18 ABI Band 7 L1b, CMI, and some multispectral imagery products that use Band 7

Date/Time of Initial Impact: August 1, 2022 at 1700 UTC

Date/Time of Expected End: September 6, 2022 at TBD Time

Length of Outage: N/A

Details/Specifics of Change:

During GOES-18 Post Launch Testing (PLT), vertically-oriented bars similar in pattern to a barcode were discovered in GOES-18 ABI Band 7 (3.9 um).  This “barcode artifact” is under investigation and a mitigation has not yet been applied to the imagery, therefore it will be present in GOES-18 L1b and CMI during the August 1 - September 6, 2022 operational interleave of GOES-17 (137.3 degrees West) and GOES-18 (137.0 degrees West).

The L1b and imagery from Band 7, including some downstream multispectral products and RGBs (Red-Green-Blue color enhanced images) that use Band 7 may be impacted by the barcode artifact. The barcode artifact is more apparent in colder scenes (e.g. at night and cold cloud tops) .  Please see the following link for more detailed information on this artifact: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Operations/GOES/documents/GOES-18%20Band%2007%20Barcode%20Artifact.pptx
