Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES-16, GOES-17, and GOES-18 Ice Concentration and Extent Products

Date/Time of Initial Impact:  November 7, 2022 1800 UTC

Details/Specifics of Change:

The GOES-16, GOES-17, and GOES-18 ABI Enterprise Ice Concentration and Extent algorithm will replace the baseline Ice Concentration and Extent algorithm on November 7, 2022 at 1800 UTC. Users of the current Ice Concentration product will not see any interruptions to data delivery but the resultant product files will change to reflect the output of the enterprise algorithm. The main ABI 2km datasets will remain the same, with no major changes to the content. There have been two additional fields added to the end product:

1)     granule_level_quality_flag

a.     The granule_level_quality_flag passed through from the Cloud Mask algorithm

2)     algorithm_disabled_due_to_mitigation

a.     A flag with values of unset/set that indicate if the algorithm was disabled because of the Focal Plane Temperature of the ABI

The Enterprise Ice Concentration and Extent (EICE) algorithm was developed by the Algorithm Working Group (AWG) with the capability to process multi-spectral data from multiple sources. This means that the science code can ingest data from various platforms (GOES-R ABI, VIIRS, etc.) and produce sensor-specific products using a similar “Enterprise” approach.

Cadence: 3hr Full Disk (00z, 03z, 06z, 09z, 12z, 15z, 18z, 21z)

Resolution: 2 km

Data Quality Flag (DQF) Changes:

The DQF variable will no longer contain the flag_masks attribute. This was a bug in the baseline and is resolved with the enterprise deployment.

Product Quality Indicator (PQI) Changes:

The number_of_qf_values attribute has been updated to 37 to correctly state the number of PQI values

A spelling issue has been fixed in the flag_meanings attribute. The meaning red_input_qf is now read_input_qf

The flag_meaning “Unused_Bit_7” in the baseline is now “off_earth_qf”

Metadata Updates:

Updates were made to the algorithm_dynamic_input_data_container, algorithm_product_version_container, and processing_parm_version_container, to correctly represent the new version of the algorithm
