Update #1 --

Topic:  Planned Transition of Meteosat-8 to Meteosat-9 to Support Indian Ocean Data Collection (IODC) Mission

Date/Time Issued:  March 29, 2022  2010 UTC

Product or Data Impacted:  Meteosat-8 Data and Products

Date/Time of Initial Impact:  April 25, 2022

Date/Time of Expected End:  June 30, 2022

Length of Event:  67 days

Details/Specifics of Change:  EUMETSAT plans to replace Meteosat-8 with Meteosat-9 as the prime geostationary satellite to support the IODC service.  Meteosat-9 will become the official IODC satellite starting June 1, 2022 at the new location of 45.5E.  Following is the schedule from EUMETSAT to facilitate users' transition from Meteosat-8 to Meteosat-9 IODC operations (parallel data flow will be provided):

From April 25, 2022, to May 31, 2022 -- Meteosat-9 will provide parallel IODC service while Meteosat-8 continues to provide the official IODC service.

During this period, Meteosat-8 image filenames from NOAA/NESDIS PDA will not be modified. Ex:

H-000-MSG1__-MSG1_IODC___-HRV______-000001___-201706121600-C

H-000-MSG1__-MSG1_IODC___-IR_016___-000001___-201706121600-C_

Corresponding PDA product short names. Ex:

MSG_IODC_HRV

MSG_IODC_IR_016

During this period, Meteosat-9 image filenames from NOAA/NESDIS PDA will contain “PAR” (for “parallel”).  Ex:

H-000-MSG2__-MSG2_IODCPAR-HRV______-000001___-202202031045-C_

H-000-MSG2__-MSG2_IODCPAR-IR_016___-000001___-202202031045-C_

Corresponding PDA product short names. Ex:

MSG2_IODC_HRV_PAR

MSG2_IODC_IR_016_PAR

From June 1, 2022, to June 30, 2022 -- Meteosat-8 will provide parallel IODC service while Meteosat-9 provides the official IODC service.

During this period, as an IODC data back-up, Meteosat-8 image filenames from NOAA/NESDIS PDA will be modified to contain “PAR” (for “parallel”). Ex:

H-000-MSG1__-MSG1_IODCPAR-HRV______-000001___-202202031045-C

H-000-MSG1__-MSG1_IODCPAR-IR_016___-000001___-202202031045-C_

Corresponding PDA product short names. Ex:

MSG1_IODC_HRV_PAR

MSG1_IODC_IR_016_PAR

During this period and onward, Meteosat-9 image filenames from NOAA/NESDIS PDA will not contain “PAR”.  Ex:

H-000-MSG2__-MSG2_IODC___-HRV______-000001___-202202031045-C_

H-000-MSG2__-MSG2_IODC___-IR_016___-000001___-202202031045-C_

Corresponding PDA product short names. Ex:

MSG2_IODC_HRV

MSG2_IODC_IR_016

From July 1, 2022 -- Meteosat-8 will stop providing the parallel IODC service.

NOAA/NESDIS plans to distribute only Met-9 data from the GEODIST system starting 1400 UTC, June 1, 2022, to 1400 UTC, June 30, 2022.  PDA distribution of Met-8 and Met-9 data will follow EUMETSAT's schedule above.  Importantly, to ensure accurate Meteosat data receipt during the overall procedure, prior to April 25, 2022, PDA users should have NESDIS PDA subscriptions to both Met-8 and Met-9 data, with and without "PAR" and “IODC” in the filenames.  For the current Met-9 PDA subscriptions, the new product names will automatically carry over when updated by the PDA.  The switch to operational Met-9 data distribution at NOAA/NESDIS should not impact McIDAS users unless your data processing precisely keys on "Meteosat-8" or SSID 51.

Updated scheduling details will be provided as they become available.
