Topic:  NOAA-21 Operational Declaration

Date/Time Issued:  April 3, 2023 1614 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted: N/A

Date/Time of Initial Impact: March 30, 2023 2200 UTC

Date/Time of Expected End:  N/A

Details/Specifics of Change:

Upon a successful Post-Launch Assessment Review (PLAR) and Handover Readiness Review (HRR), OSPO has assumed responsibility for NOAA-21 mission operations in the 1325 Local Time of Ascending Node (LTAN) (PM) ascending orbit . The calibration and validation (cal/val) activities on NOAA-21 are still ongoing, but satellite command and control is under OSPO operations to include spacecraft anomalies and conjunction avoidance maneuvers. At this point, the JPSS satellite priority assignments are:

      Primary: NOAA-20

      Secondary: S-NPP

      Tertiary: NOAA-21

When NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS) confirms that it is ready to assimilate the NOAA-21 sounder data (ATMS and CrIS) in its modeling system and the performance of the VIIRS Imagery product is acceptable, then NOAA-21 will be declared as the secondary and the JPSS satellites assignments will be:

      Primary: NOAA-20

      Secondary: NOAA-21

      Tertiary: S-NPP

When majority of NOAA-21 products reach provisional maturity, then NOAA-21 will be designated the primary satellite and the JPSS satellite assignments will be:

      Primary: NOAA-21

      Secondary: NOAA-20

      Tertiary: S-NPP

Other messages to the community will be sent regarding NOAA-21 operational product availability as those product provisional milestones occur.
