Update #1: 12-hour outage of GOES-16 GLM products has been postponed.

Topic: 12-hour outage of GOES-16 GLM products starting June 29, 2023 at 0400 UTC

Date/Time Issued: June 26, 2023 2027 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted: All GOES-16 GLM products distributed via GRB, AWIPS, and PDA (including downstream services such as NODD and CLASS)

Date/Time of Initial Impact: June 29, 2023 0400 UTC

Date/Time of Expected End: June 29, 2023 1600 UTC

Length of Outage: 12 hours

Details/Specifics of Change: A scheduled flight software update for GOES-16 GLM requiring a reboot of the instrument will result in an outage of all GLM products for up to 12 hours starting at 0400 UTC on June 29, 2023. This software update will bring GOES-16 in line with GOES-18, which is already running the latest software version. Therefore, GOES-18 will not be impacted and will continue to provide nominal data throughout the period that GOES-16 will be unavailable.

Following the instrument turn-on, image navigation and registration may be slightly degraded for up to 48 hours. This has the potential to cause geolocation errors for GLM events during this time period.

Please note: This activity will be postponed in the event of a critical weather day. It will slip one business day, remaining at the same time of day, until they do not conflict with critical weather day.
