Update #1: Estimated outage times for DSCOVR instruments have changed

Topic: DSCOVR NORM to NORM Reset

Date/Time Issued: October 31, 2023 1835 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted: DSCOVR Instruments

Date/Time of Initial Impact: November 1, 2023 1500 UTC

Date/Time of Expected End:  November 1, 2023 2030 UTC

Length of Outage: Instrument outage varies, see detail outage below

Details/Specifics of Change:

To alleviate rising trends of memory fragmentation on DSCOVR there is a planned NORM to NORM reset (commanded processor reset). This activity would result in a data outage for all instruments as the engineering team initiates a processor reset, recovers the spacecraft from safehold mode, and configures the spacecraft and instruments for science mode.  The primary customer, NOAA/NWS Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), will switch over to ACE as primary source during the DSCOVR Commanded Reset activities.

Estimated outage for DSCOVR instruments

Magnetometer - 2 hours

Faraday Cup - 3 hours
ESA - 3 hours, 54 minutes
EPIC - 29 hours (imaging stopping at 1900z on Oct 31, Resuming at 0000z on Nov 02 )
NISTAR - 56 hours (TBD due to a three part recovery that span several days)
