Topic:  GOES-16 Change to Process for Updating ABI VNIR Gain Coefficients

Date/Time Issued: March 27, 2024 1924Z

Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES-16 ABI L1b Radiances, Bands 1 - 6

Date/Time of Initial Impact: April 01, 2024

Date/Time of Expected End: N/A

Length of Outage: N/A

Details/Specifics of Change:

The gain coefficient calibration parameter for GOES-16 ABI VNIR Channels (Bands 01-06) will no longer be updated automatically at the execution of Solar Calibrations. Going forward, it will be updated after analysis and processing by the GOES-R ABI Calibration Working Group (CWG). The purpose of this is to assure that optimal gains are applied, and to reduce the frequency of the gain updates to occur only when necessary. The updates should be imperceptible to users and will only occur as the ABI instrument goes through natural changes.

The GOES ABI Calibration Events Log (https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOESCal/goes_SatelliteAnomalies.php) will be updated as the operational calibration parameters are updated. Per the PUG-L1b-vol3, the current calculated gain coefficient parameter for each detector of reflective bands (1-6) is available in the "gain" field of the ABI Instrument Calibration Data Files (Table 5.1.6.2-2).
