Topic: GOES-17 Annual Storage Activation and Checkout at 89.5 W
Date/Time Issued: May 27, 2026 2100 UTC
Product(s) or Data Impacted: All L1b and GLM L2 data delivered via GRB
Date/Time of Initial Impact: June 1, 2026 12:00 UTC
Date/Time of Expected End: June 15, 2026 14:00 UTC
Length of Outage: 15 Days 2 Hours
Details/Specifics of Change: Starting on June 1, 2026, GOES-17 L1b and GLM L2 data generation and distribution will undergo testing from the GOES-17 Standby location at 89.5 deg W. This test period presents an opportunity for all GRB users to test and verify their internal system processing capabilities when receiving data from a GOES-R series spacecraft (GOES-17 in this case) at this orbital location.
GOES-17 GRB data distribution will be turned on for the period of June 2, 2026 through June 15, 2026. There will also be limited data flows to select endpoints during the course of the checkout, as summarized in the table below. The ABI will operate primarily in Mode 6, however Mode 4 will be used to fill timelines around Solar Calibration and Desert Monitoring scans. Data availability is detailed in the table below. Throughout the entire time period, data quality may be impacted by calibration and navigation issues, and there will be outages due to testing for which no notifications will be sent since GOES-17 is non-operational.
During this checkout period, GOES-17 product generation and distribution will be handled through the GOES-R Integration and Test environment. As a result, data filenames will feature an “IR” prefix rather than the standard “OE” prefix.
GOES-17 testing will complete on Monday, June 15, 2026 and the spacecraft will enter storage mode, at which time all product generation and dataflows will cease.
