REPORT DATE: 07-02-2018 REPORT TIME: 1031 UTC REGION: ATLANTIC SUB REGION: MID ATLANTIC U.S. AREA/BLOCK: North Atlantic 6627 IMAGE DATE: 07-01-2018 IMAGE TIME: 2242 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL1A MODE: Interferometric Wide (IW) VV RESOLUTION: 5x20 meter LOCATION: 40°24'03" N/72°22'13" W AREA: 5.10 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil, but it is believed to be an oil slick that emanated from the Coimbra shipwreck since it was connected to that location. The 6.5 nm long slick had a fairly large contrast to its surroundings and appeared to be out of place even though it was in an area of full of false positives created by wind variability and other natural phenomena. Winds were light and variable at the time of the image, which do not entirely support the slick's orientation; however, its linear orientation and meandering nature was supported by light model ocean currents in the vicinity. UNCERTAINTIES: Due to the close proximity of false positives in the vicinity of the slick that also had strong contrast to the surroundings, we are uncertain of the slick's more precise areal extent.
