REPORT DATE: 07-21-2018 REPORT TIME: 0400 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: MISSISSIPPI CANYON 474 IMAGE DATE: 07-20-2018 IMAGE TIME: 2356 UTC DATA SOURCE: RADARSAT2 MODE: ScanSAR Narrow VV RESOLUTION: 50 meter LOCATION: 28°31'15" N/88°17'19" W AREA: 0.81 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The anomaly is believed to be associated with NRC report #1218851. The segmented anomaly had a combination length of approximately 2.93 nm N-SSE and 0.09 nm in width. The dark anomaly had a large contrast to its homogeneous surrounding and there were no sign of natural phenomena. The wind data at the time of the image partly aligned with the orientation of the anomaly which was coming from the W-NW between 10-15 kts. UNCERTAINTIES: The NRC report mentioned was from 2018-07-19. Although the coordinates provided in the NRC report were associated to an oil facility, the anomaly in the image did not directly connect to it. Lastly, the NRC report stated that it was actually an ethylene glycol leak.
