REPORT DATE: 08-07-2018 REPORT TIME: 2347 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: MISSISSIPPI CANYON 20 IMAGE DATE: 08-07-2018 IMAGE TIME: 1849 UTC DATA SOURCE: SUOMINPPVIIRS MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 375 meter LOCATION: 28°56'16" N/88°58'14" W AREA: 85.24 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. It was believed to be an oil slick that emanated from the destroyed Taylor platform site. The slick meandered to the east in accordance with model ocean currents toward the east at about 1 kt. The anomaly had a white color due to its location in sunglint, which is a common characteristic of a marine oil slick in sunglint. Due to its physical characteristics and connection to the Taylor leak site, we have High confidence that the anomaly was an oil slick. UNCERTAINTIES: Due to the coarse spatial resolution of the imagery, the calculated areal extent of the slick is only a rough approximation of slick's true extent at the time of the image.
