REPORT DATE: 08-12-2018 REPORT TIME: 1120 UTC REGION: PACIFIC SUB REGION: ALASKA AREA/BLOCK: Gulf of Alaska 6980 IMAGE DATE: 08-12-2018 IMAGE TIME: 0302 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL1B MODE: Interferometric Wide (IW) VV RESOLUTION: 5x20 meter LOCATION: 59°10'56" N/141°34'16" W AREA: 3.89 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: Medium REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. It was located approximately 50 NMI due south of Icy Bay in mainland Alaska. A suspected vessel target was inferred, though not directly connected to the feature. The anomaly was 5.5 NMI long by 0.3 NMI wide, widened with increasing distance, and exhibited good contrast against the ocean background. Possible feathering was observed on the north end, consistent with satellite derived winds from the west at 10 knots. UNCERTAINTIES: The slick was wider than typically observed with oil discharges, and may be due to fishing activity. Additionally, there were several nautral looking surface anomalies in the immediate vicinity, but they were less well defined and had diffuse edges. It's possible that all anomalies are related and the result of fishing activity.
