REPORT DATE: 08-17-2018 REPORT TIME: 1833 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: MISSISSIPPI CANYON 20 IMAGE DATE: 08-16-2018 IMAGE TIME: 2347 UTC DATA SOURCE: COSMOSKYMED MODE: ScanSAR Wide VV RESOLUTION: 30 meter LOCATION: 28°56'16" N/88°58'14" W AREA: 20.97 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The segmented anomaly was believed to be oil that emanated from the destroyed Taylor platform site. The oil slick had a large contrast to its surroundings and well-defined edges, which made it stand out of place. The southern segment was oriented in accordance with southerly winds of approximately 7 kt at the time of the image, according to local NOAA buoy data. UNCERTAINTIES: We wee uncertain that the northern segment of the oil slick (oriented in a SW-NE direction) originated from the Taylor site; however, it was believed that it was Taylor oil carried off and along the convergence zone that typically exists in the vicinity.
