REPORT DATE: 08-27-2018 REPORT TIME: 1345 UTC REGION: PACIFIC SUB REGION: ALASKA AREA/BLOCK: St. George Basin 7060 IMAGE DATE: 08-27-2018 IMAGE TIME: 0504 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL1B MODE: Interferometric Wide (IW) VV RESOLUTION: 5x20 meter LOCATION: 56°04'34" N/170°14'07" W AREA: 11.65 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: Medium REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. It was clearly associated with a vessel, not believed to be a wake, and measured approximately 25 nmi long by 0.25 nmi wide on average. A portion of the feature exhibited feathering, and was consistent with satellite derived winds from the WSW at 10-15 knots. It had good contrast against the ocean background and was removed from natural phenomena. The edges were moderate to very diffuse. UNCERTAINTIES: The anomaly lacked appreciable widening with distance and sharp well defined edges, 2 characteristics that are often observed in oil slicks. The anomaly looked very similar to those in confirmed cases of surface films associated with fishing activity. However, pollution could not be ruled out.
