REPORT DATE: 08-29-2018 REPORT TIME: 2240 UTC REGION: ATLANTIC SUB REGION: MID ATLANTIC U.S. AREA/BLOCK: North Atlantic 7004 IMAGE DATE: 08-29-2018 IMAGE TIME: 1520 UTC DATA SOURCE: LANDSAT8 MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 30 meter LOCATION: 40°06'02" N/69°55'03" W AREA: 0.36 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The narrow oil slick stretched about 1.8 nm NNE from the repeat leak source that is currently known as Wreck 1487, located due south of Nantucket Island. The slick had a dark outline with white/silver areas indicative of thicker oil relative to the dark, thinner oil present along the boundaries, and its orientation is supported by light model ocean currents in the vicinity. Confidence the anomaly is an oil slick is high given its physical characteristics in satellite imagery and its connections to a repeat leak source. UNCERTAINTIES: Given that the anomaly was associated with a repeat leak source, there is no uncertainty that the anomaly was oil.
