REPORT DATE: 09-21-2018 REPORT TIME: 0220 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: MISSISSIPPI CANYON 20 IMAGE DATE: 09-20-2018 IMAGE TIME: 1629 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL2A MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 10 meter LOCATION: 28°56'16" N/88°58'14" W AREA: 235.7 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The anomaly was stretched across an area roughly 21 x 14 nmi and appeared to be emanating from the destroyed Taylor Energy platform. The anomaly appeared stringy with several open patches. Measured wind in the area at the time of observation was under 5.0 kts. Modeled ocean surface currents ranged from 1.0 - 1.5 kts while traveling towards the northeast. Confidence was determined to be High given the association with the know repeat leak source. Areas with a silvery shimmer were also present. UNCERTAINTIES: Several areas of biogenic material were observed in the vicinity. The precise extent of the anomaly is unknown due to possible integration with algae on the water's surface and cloud cover.
