REPORT DATE: 09-25-2018 REPORT TIME: 1345 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: MISSISSIPPI CANYON 20 IMAGE DATE: 09-25-2018 IMAGE TIME: 1151 UTC DATA SOURCE: RADARSAT2 MODE: ScanSAR Narrow VV RESOLUTION: 50 meter LOCATION: 28°56'16" N/88°58'14" W AREA: 40.04 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. A large rather shapeless oil slick emanated from the destroyed Taylor platform. Two well defined areas of oil were present near the source in the east and another in the west. Winds were from the south at 10 knots at the time of the image. UNCERTAINTIES: The amount and even presence of oil between the two well defined areas is uncertain, but was included because even though it was less defined it still stood out relative to its homogeneous surroundings. The orientation of the oil slick from north to south at the point source is consistent with the surface winds. The full extent of the oil may be greater than what is depicted here because isolated anomalies were detected in the image much farther north out of the field of view of the present report.
