REPORT DATE: 10-14-2018 REPORT TIME: 0250 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: SOUTH TIMBALIER 28 IMAGE DATE: 10-13-2018 IMAGE TIME: 1642 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL2A MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 10 meter LOCATION: 28°58'57" N/90°16'08" W AREA: 3.52 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: Medium-High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. It measured nearly 11 NMI in length by approximately 0.05 NMI wide on average. An origin was not clear, but the easternmost extent of the anomaly touched a known pipeline location that resided in South Timbalier 23 where a pipeline leak was reported earlier in the day in NRC #1227352. The winds near the time of the image were from the east at 10 knots, which also supported the anomaly's connection to the NRC report. It exhibited good contrast against the ocean background and had embedded patches of a shimmery white color, consistent with oil. It tested negative for vegetation. UNCERTAINTIES: The confidence was reduced due to 1) The proximity to shore where false positives are more common, and 2) The uncertainty of the source.
