REPORT DATE: 12-19-2018 REPORT TIME: 1530 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: MISSISSIPPI CANYON 778 IMAGE DATE: 12-19-2018 IMAGE TIME: 0001 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL1A MODE: Interferometric Wide (IW) VV RESOLUTION: 5x20 meter LOCATION: 28°11'28" N/88°29'49" W AREA: 4.88 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: Medium REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The anomaly appeared to be emanating from a likely point source and stretched 9.9 nmi towards the west. Measured winds at the time of observation in the area were 10 kts and from the east. Modeled ocean currents were under 1.0 kt and towards the west. Confidence was determined to be Medium given that the anomaly did not widen with distance, possessed a sharp contrast, and also had diffuse edges. UNCERTAINTIES: The material is not believed to be crude oil however the characteristics observed in the satellite image displays a ocean surrface dampening similar to oil.
