REPORT DATE: 02-08-2019 REPORT TIME: 0240 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: MISSISSIPPI CANYON 20 IMAGE DATE: 02-07-2019 IMAGE TIME: 1634 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL2A MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 10 meter LOCATION: 28°56'16" N/88°58'14" W AREA: 6.92 square kilometers (Updated 05/14/2020) CONFIDENCE: High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The anomaly measures approximately 20.3 nmi in length and up to 0.4 nmi in width, and appeared to originate from the destroyed Taylor platform. The anomaly stretched south from the point source, then curved east, north, and west in a nearly-closed loop before continuing west and southwestward. The anomaly appeared white with small areas of brown, indicating the likely presence of thicker oil. It appeared initially in sharp contrast to the background before becoming fainter further on. Winds were from the south at 10 kts. Modeled currents over the six hours prior to the image were around 1 kt, and varied considerably in direction in the area of the anomaly. UNCERTAINTIES: Due to the repeat leak nature of the suspected source, there are no uncertanties.
