REPORT DATE: 03-23-2019 REPORT TIME: 1145 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: SHIP SHOAL 252 IMAGE DATE: 03-22-2019 IMAGE TIME: 1639 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL2A MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 10 meter LOCATION: 28°23'21" N/91°07'21" W AREA: 7.90 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The anomaly has a distinct area of possible oil and another distinct area of possible thicker oil. The area of possible oil appears dark against the ocean background while the area of possible thicker oil appears silver with a light blue tint against the ocean background. The total area of oil extends for 8.23NM with a maximum width of 0.5NM. This anomaly does not have a clear source of origination however it should be noted that there are several underwater pipelines in the immediate vicinity of the northeastern section of the anomaly. Recorded winds near the time of this observation were out of the NNW at 8KTS and agrees well with the orientation of this anomaly. Although no source could be identified confidence was determined to be high due to its close resemblance of an oil signature and its proximity to underwater pipelines. UNCERTAINTIES: There is no observed source for this anomaly and there was not a NRC report for this anomaly.
