REPORT DATE: 03-23-2019 REPORT TIME: 2031 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: MISSISSIPPI CANYON 20 IMAGE DATE: 03-23-2019 IMAGE TIME: 1644 UTC DATA SOURCE: ASTER MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 15 meter LOCATION: 28°56'16" N/88°58'14" W AREA: 111.2 square kilometers (Updated 05/14/2020) CONFIDENCE: High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The amorphous anomaly appears to be connected to the destroyed Taylor platform and is believed to be oil. The slick was dark against the ocean background, contained white areas believed to have been areas of relatively thicker oil, and had jagged and unnatural edges and turns. Winds were from the east at about 9 kts, but the spread of the oil in various directions was not directly supported by the wind data. The slick extended approximately 11 nmi N-S and 15.5 nmi E-W. UNCERTAINTIES: A more precise areal extent of the slick could not be determined due to the presence of clouds in the scene. The slick's area calculated for this report is only a rough approximation.
