REPORT DATE: 07-17-2019 REPORT TIME: 0130 UTC REGION: PACIFIC SUB REGION: CALIFORNIA AREA/BLOCK: Southern California 6638 IMAGE DATE: 07-16-2019 IMAGE TIME: 1822 UTC DATA SOURCE: LANDSAT7 MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 30 meter LOCATION: 34°23'10" N/120°00'04" W AREA: 15.71 square kilometers (Updated 05/14/2020) CONFIDENCE: Medium-High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The anomay was 11.3nm long and 1.2nm at its widest part, and had sliver shimmer for the most part of anomaly. It was located 18.5nm WSW from Santa Babara, CA. Several oil wells were located at the western end of the anomaly, the closet one was marked as the possble point source here. Also, there were several natural seep sites at the eastern end of the anomaly. The wind at the time was from the west at 5kt which suggested the anomaly was likely to emanate from the oil wells given the wind direction. UNCERTAINTIES: Given the proximity of several oil wells, and presence of natural seep near the anomaly, the exact point source could not be pinpointed with complete certainty. Also, there were oil signatures to the north of the anomaly, however they were likely to be related to natural seeps.
