REPORT DATE: 08-23-2019 REPORT TIME: 1245 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: MOBILE 858 IMAGE DATE: 08-22-2019 IMAGE TIME: 2353 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL1A MODE: Interferometric Wide (IW) VV RESOLUTION: 20 meter LOCATION: 30°06'53" N/88°35'36" W AREA: 3.37 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: Medium REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The anomaly was located approximately 14 nmi south of Pascagoula, MS and appeared to emanate southward from a point source of unknown type. It was approximately 3.1 nmi in length and up to 0.5 nmi in width. The anomaly was distinct from its surroundings and exhibited sharp edges along its western side. SAR-derived winds at the time of the image were around 10 kts from the SSE. UNCERTAINTIES: There were no known reports of oil slicks in the area. The orientation of the anomaly was not well-aligned with the wind direction. The nature of the suspected point source could not be determined, although there were known oil facilities nearby. These uncertainties lead to medium confidence that this was oil.
