REPORT DATE: 09-08-2019 REPORT TIME: 1610 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: MISSISSIPPI CANYON 778 IMAGE DATE: 09-07-2019 IMAGE TIME: 1626 UTC DATA SOURCE: LANDSAT8 MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 30 meter LOCATION: 28°11'28" N/88°29'45" W AREA: 3.33 square kilometers (Updated 05/26/2020) CONFIDENCE: Medium Note: This image is from yesterday. REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The anomaly was located approximately 67 nmi SE of the mouth of the Mississippi River. It was approximately 4.6 nmi in length and up to 0.56 nmi in width, and appeared to emanate northward from an oil facility. The anomaly had a dark appearance against its background, and exhibited sharp edges. Winds at a nearby observing site at the time of the image were around 5 kts from the NNE. UNCERTAINTIES: No NRC report could be associated with the anomaly. There were likely biogenic features in proximity to the anomaly, but they were distinctly different in appearance. Thus, confidence that this was oil is medium.
