REPORT DATE: 01-19-2020 REPORT TIME: 0745 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: MISSISSIPPI CANYON 20 IMAGE DATE: 01-19-2020 IMAGE TIME: 0002 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL1A MODE: Interferometric Wide (IW) VV RESOLUTION: 20 meter LOCATION: 28°56'16" N/88°58'14" W AREA: 6.26 square kilometers (Updated 05/14/2020) CONFIDENCE: Medium REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. An oil slick extended 5.9 nm to the southwest of the destroyed Taylor platform. The slick was up to 0.5 nm wide. Winds at the time of the image were from the west at 5-10 knots. UNCERTAINTIES: The anomaly exhibited only moderate contrast with its surroundings. There were other phenomena that merged with the oil that made it particularly difficult to determine the full extent of the slick, which may extend even farther to the southwest than depicted here. In addition, no anomaly was detected 12 hours earlier (18/1150Z) in a Radarsat 2 image with more favorable (higher) wind speeds. Taken together, confidence is assessed as medium.
