REPORT DATE: 01-23-2020 REPORT TIME: 1045 UTC REGION: PACIFIC SUB REGION: HAWAII AREA/BLOCK: N/A IMAGE DATE: 01-23-2020 IMAGE TIME: 0422 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL1A MODE: Interferometric Wide (IW) VV RESOLUTION: 20 meter LOCATION: 20°19'28" N/152°53'01" W AREA: 2.96 square kilometers (Updated 05/14/2020) CONFIDENCE: Medium REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The anomaly was located approximately 125 nmi ENE of Hawaii's Cape Kumukahi. It was approximately 3.7 nmi in length and up to 0.3 nmi in width. The anomaly exhibited sharp contrast to its surroundings and was distinct and isolated from natural features elsewhere in the image. Winds were 5-10 kts from the SE near the time of the image. UNCERTAINTIES: No oil slicks were reported in the area. The anomaly could have been related to fishing activity or a natural phenomenon. A vessel was present 7 nmi to the north of the anomaly, but may not have been associated. Thus, confidence that this was oil is medium.
