REPORT DATE: 08-01-2021 REPORT TIME: 0900 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: SOUTH TIMBALIER 24 IMAGE DATE: 07-31-2021 IMAGE TIME: 1628 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL2B MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 10 meter LOCATION: 29°01'06" N/90°08'18" W AREA: 4.15 square kilometers CONFIDENCE: High REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The anomaly was located approximately 7 nmi SSW of Port Fourchon, LA in the Gulf of Mexico, and measured approximately 2.2 nmi in length and 1.1 nmi in width oriented NW-SE. The anomaly appeared dark in color with whiter areas mixed in suggesting thicker oil. The anomaly was co-located with existing NRC report #1312346, which reported a sheen. Winds at the time of the image were from the NW at around 5 kts. UNCERTAINTIES: There were numerous oil facilities and pipelines within and near the anomaly, but none could be positively identified as a likely source. Clouds and false positives around the anomaly made the full extent of the anomaly uncertain. However, the NRC report of a large sheen at this location approximately 90 minutes prior to the image time allowed for high confidence that this was oil.
