REPORT DATE: 10-31-2022 REPORT TIME: 0900 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: GULF OF MEXICO 629 IMAGE DATE: 10-31-2022 IMAGE TIME: 0034 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL1A MODE: Interferometric Wide (IW) VV RESOLUTION: 5X20 meter LOCATION: 28°04'40" N/96°41'29" W AREA: 4.68 square kilometers CONFIDENCE: Medium-High REMARKS: Possible, unconfirmed oil was observed in satellite imagery. The possible oil was located about 25 nmi NE of Port Aransas, TX and about 5 nmi offshore from Matagorda Island. The possible slick measured approximately 2.5 nmi in length and up to 1.0 nmi in width, and had a distinct dark appearance with sharp edges. Winds at the time of the image were from the SSE at around 6 kts. UNCERTAINTIES: Several oil facilities and pipelines were located in the vicinity of the possible oil. There was some indication of widening suggesting a pipeline as a possible source of the oil at the anomaly's southern end, but this could not be confidently identified as a likely source due to the anomaly being less well-defined in that area. No known reports of an oil spill near this location were found. The proximity to land allowed for the possibility that the anomaly could be of natural origin.
