REPORT DATE: 10-29-2023 REPORT TIME: 0115 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: LUND 768 IMAGE DATE: 10-28-2023 IMAGE TIME: 1627 UTC DATA SOURCE: LANDSAT9 MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 30 meter LOCATION: 26°11'08" N/88°56'02" W AREA: 3.34 square kilometers CONFIDENCE: Medium-High REPORT MAP/GIS FILES: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/ocean/marinepollution/ REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The possible oil appeared to be the result of a bilge dumping from a southbound vessel located approximately 200 nmi south of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The possible oil extended northward approximately 9.9 nmi from the vessel, and was up to 0.3 nmi in width. The anomaly was dark against its background and away from natural seep areas, though its appearance was not particularly well-defined. There were indications of feathering along the anomaly. Winds at the time of the image were from the E at about 15 kts. UNCERTAINTIES: A portion of the anomaly could have been the result of a vessel wake, although the wider areas suggesting feathering were more likely than the rest of the anomaly to be oil. There was an additional area of possible oil about 35 nmi north of the suspected source vessel, but it was disconnected from the main anomaly and was in an area of natural seeps.
