REPORT DATE: 02-08-2024 REPORT TIME: 0930 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: EUGENE ISLAND 208 IMAGE DATE: 02-08-2024 IMAGE TIME: 0010 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL1A MODE: Interferometric Wide (IW) VV RESOLUTION: 5X20 meter LOCATION: 28°39'52" N/91°30'35" W AREA: 2.00 square kilometers CONFIDENCE: High REPORT MAP/GIS FILES: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/ocean/marinepollution/ REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The anomaly was approximately 40 nm offshore of Louisiana in the Eugene Island area of the Gulf of Mexico. It was dark in contrast to its surroundings and appeared out of place. The anomaly may have been related to NRC # 1390974, release of oil due to platform decommissioning (7 Feb 2024). Possible oil trailed to the northwest of the suspected point source for 4.5 nm and was .35 nm at its widest. The trajectory aligned with winds from SE at 17 kts. UNCERTAINTIES: Winds were high for optimal oil detection in SAR imagery, and the possible oil was patchy and detached from the point source named in the NRC report. However, given the wind direction, speed, and latency between the original NRC report and this report's image capture, confidence remains high the two are related.
