REPORT DATE: 05-07-2024 REPORT TIME: 0020 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: SOUTH TIMBALIER 16 IMAGE DATE: 05-06-2024 IMAGE TIME: 1631 UTC DATA SOURCE: LANDSAT8 MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 30 meter LOCATION: 29°00'36" N/90°28'47" W AREA: 6.59 square kilometers CONFIDENCE: Medium-High REPORT MAP/GIS FILES: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/ocean/marinepollution/ REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The possible oil was located approximately 3 NM south of Timbalier Bay off the coast of Louisiana. It measured 4 NM long and 1.5 NM at its widest. The anomaly was dark against the background, showed strong contrast against the surrounding environment on its leading edge along the northwest side, with diffuse feathering to the southeast. There was a brighter sheen indicative of thicker oil along the northern and western edges. Winds were out of the east at 14 kn. UNCERTAINTIES: The source could not be identified with confidence due to the possible oil not being directly attached to any of the multiple facilities nearby, including wells, platforms and pipelines. However, E winds and SE feathering pattern suggest the source was located in this direction.
