Subject: Product Outage/Anomaly: Update NOAA-17 HIRS Level 1b Data Quality Update, Issued: December 16, 2011 1829 UTC

Topic: NOAA-17 HIRS Level 1b Data Quality Update
Date/Time Issued: December 16, 2011 1829 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted: NOAA-17 HIRS

Date/Time of Initial Impact: December 3, 2011, 2125Z

Date/Time of Expected End: TBD

Length of the Outage: TBD

Details/Specifics of Change:
On December 3, 2011 (DOY 337) at 21:25Z, there was an increase in the NOAA-17 HIRS filter motor current and temperature. The motor current increased approximately 20mA to 170mA and later dropped back towards its previous level. There was a few tenths of one degree increase in filterwheel temperature. This anomaly, considered as a sign of aging of the HIRS filter motor, mainly affects the HIRS longwave channels. These channels have escalated but stable noise levels. List below are current values of NEdN (unit: mW/(m^2-sr-cm^-1)) for channels 1 through 12.
Channel SPEC NEdN
1 3.00 11.7
2 0.67 1.80
3 0.50 1.31
4 0.31 0.61
5 0.21 0.44
6 0.24 0.38
7 0.20 0.24
8 0.10 0.05
9 0.15 0.11
10 0.15 0.19
11 0.20 0.15
12 0.20 0.19
